Health, Medicaid - Main

Page history last edited by Rebecca May 13 years ago
  • Budget would result in the cancellation of health insurance coverage for approximately 70,000 people (Center on Budget and Policy Priorities).

  •  Cuts $500 million from Medicaid through a variety of reforms, including increasing co-pays and deductibles. The bill is provides no detail on how these cuts will be made. According to the Wisconsin Council on Children and Families, the shift in authority to medicaid law (and program cuts) is based in the budget repair bill (stalled in the Senate at this writing): "That bill, which was being fast-tracked through the Senate, contains an unprecedented shift in the power to rewrite the law from our elected lawmakers to an unelected administrator in the Department of Health Services (DHS). The Medicaid-related policies that have been established in the statute books over the last 15 years – including such things as income eligibility limits, other eligibility requirements, premiums, co-payments, and services covered – could all be rewritten by the DHS Secretary behind closed doors. According to the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau, the Medicaid-related changes would, “remove the entire Legislature from determining substantial elements of the medical assistance program.” (Wisconsin Council on Children and Families) http://wiskids.blogspot.com/2011/03/medicaid-power-shift-would-minimize.html

  • Eliminates a state law that requires insurance companies with prescription drug coverage to include coverage for prescription birth control.
